Photography with Purpose

Documentary photography for not-for-profits, community organisations and people working to make a difference.

The best photographs do more than show people what happened. They help people understand why it matters.

I work with not-for-profits, community organisations and purpose-led projects to document their work through honest, story-driven photography, capturing the people, places and moments that bring a bigger story to life.

My approach is grounded in documentary photography. I’m interested in real people doing real work, the places that shape that work, and the small details that help someone on the outside feel connected to it.

That might mean spending a day in the field with a conservation team, documenting volunteers working in their community, following a project from beginning to end, or travelling somewhere remote to tell a story that rarely gets seen.

It’s a visual story your organisation can use to help people see the work, understand why it matters and care about what happens next.

Let’s talk if your work centers on:

Conservation + environment

Wildlife, landscapes, fieldwork, restoration and the people working to protect the places they love.

Having spent much of my career working in the environmental not-for-profit sector, I understand that conservation photography often needs to do more than capture a beautiful landscape.

Sometimes you need to show what’s being lost. Sometimes you need to document the solution. And sometimes you need to introduce supporters to the people quietly doing the work.

Community + social impact

Some of the most important work happens a long way from a photography studio.

I’m interested in documenting community programs, volunteers, grassroots organisations and projects that are making life better for people and places.

Rather than manufacturing moments for the camera, I want to spend time with the people involved and photograph the story as it unfolds.

Regional + remote stories

Regional Australia is where I live and where much of my own photography is made.

I’m particularly interested in stories from small towns and regional and remote communities, especially the people, organisations and projects that rarely receive the same attention as those happening in our cities.

Campaign + fundraising storytelling

Sometimes photographs have a very particular job to do.

They might need to introduce a supporter to someone whose story anchors an appeal. Show the impact of a program. Put a human face to a complicated issue. Or help someone sitting hundreds of kilometers away understand why their support matters.

This is where my two worlds overlap.

I’ve spent more than 15 years working across fundraising, communications and marketing, so I understand how photography fits into a much bigger supporter story.

I’m thinking not only about the photograph, but about how that photograph will eventually be used to connect someone with your work.

My approach

I’m drawn to photographs that feel observed rather than manufactured.

I’ll give direction when it’s useful, but I’m much more interested in documenting people in their element than lining everyone up for the obligatory photo.

That means spending time watching, listening and looking for the smaller moments around the obvious ones.

The muddy boots beside the ute. The hands doing the work. The conversation happening away from the group. The landscape around it all.

Those details are often what make a story feel real.

When I photograph a project, I’m thinking about the whole story.

That means capturing the wide landscapes and establishing images, but also portraits, interactions, details, processes and the quieter moments in between.

I also understand the practical reality of working in communications.

You need portrait and landscape orientations. Space for copy. Images that work at different crops. A strong hero photograph alongside a broader library that can keep telling the story long after the project is finished.

My aim is to leave you with a cohesive collection of photographs that feels unmistakably like your organisation, your people and your work.
